Shelia C. McClearyMarch 30, 1942 ~ March 30, 2017 (age 75)
On the occasion of her 75th birthday, Sheila McCleary went to be with the Lord after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was born March 30, 1942 in Akron, OH to Warren and Jessie McCleary. After graduating from the University of Akron, Sheila began her career as a teacher for Akron Public Schools.
Miss McCleary was the kind of teacher that students recall as someone who made a difference in their life. She was dedicated to her pupils and was passionate about teaching reading. Miss McCleary used various techniques to help children develop a love of reading including using music as a tool to learn, a summer school program, and was instrumental in the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) program. Miss McCleary was co-author of a textbook used internationally to teach teachers how to diagnose reading disorders.
She was active in numerous organizations including College Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Pi Lambda Theta, and retired teacher associations.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother, Pete; and her nieces and nephew who she loved to spoil; and close friend, Rita Kessler.

Friends may call at Bacher Funeral Home, 3326 Manchester Rd. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at East Liberty Church of the Nazarene, 700 East Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, OH 44319. Pastor Mike Hirschfelt and Robert Aleshire officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
