Allen Kenneth PayneApril 19, 1936 ~ December 8, 2017 (age 81)
Allen Kenneth “Ken” Payne, 81, returned to his heavenly home on December 8, 2017 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Ken was born in a two-room log cabin in Mountainview, Tennessee on April 19, 1936. At an early age, his family moved to Akron, Ohio and made it their lifelong home. Ken graduated from Akron South High School in 1954. Upon graduation, Ken served his country in the United States Army and later became a carpenter apprentice. In the late 1960’s he used his skills to create a Portage Lakes staple, Ken Payne Builders with his brother Roy.
Ken was very active in his community. He was elected President of the Akron and Ohio State Home Builders Association, was a founding member of the Portage Lakes Ducks, a University of Akron Home Building advisory committee member, and the financial chairman for Lakeview Christian Church.
He loved to play golf, travel the world with the love of his life, Judy, have a cigar, a glass of scotch, and be surrounded by his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Garner and Jessie Payne; brother-in-law, Don Miller; and his infant son.
Ken was a loving husband to his wife of 57 years, Judy. He was a devoted father to his two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry (Jay) Herman and Connie (Kurt) Willgues. He was the perfect grandpa to his six grandchildren, T.J. (Ashley) Herman, Jessi (Brandon) Milner, Brent Herman, and Maggie Willgues; and his great-granddaughter, Mia Herman. He is also survived by his siblings, Roy (Dolly) Payne, Melrose Miller, Bob (Peggy) Payne, Joe (Sue) Payne; and many nieces and nephews.
A God-fearing man and friend to many, Ken will be deeply missed. He was truly remarkable and well loved.
Friends and Family are invited to Lakeview Christian Church, 4613 South Main Street, Akron on Friday, December 15, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., where services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 10 a.m., with Pastor Darryl Moulder and Pastor Jim Gindlesberger officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lakeview Christian Church or the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, 70 West Streetsboro Street, Suite 201, Hudson, Ohio 44236 in memory of Ken.
