Sophie Schierer (nee Smutak)December 23, 1926 ~ December 5, 2017 (age 90)
Sophie Schierer, (nee, Smutak), 90, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2017. For 65 years she was the devoted wife of the late Harry Schierer of Norton, Ohio. Sophie was born on December 23, 1926 in West Pike Run Township, PA to the late Vasil and Theodora Smutak (nee, Kurcik/Kraus).
She was preceded in death by her siblings Anna Oravecz, Mary Newman, twin brothers Stephen & Adam Smutak, Helen Smutak, Madeline Specht, Andrew Smutak, William Smutak, and her nephew, Junior Newman, and niece, Christine Krause. Sophie is survived by nieces Dorothy Robillard, Janet Hayes, Marion Sedlacko, Suzanne Teddar, and Sharon Smutak; nephews Michael T. Oravecz (Linda), David and Michael Dallas, William Jr., Mark (Eroline), Robert (Donna), Stephen and Richard Smutak; and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law Marie Thomas (Safety Harbor, FL) and nieces Nancy Howard, Patty Thomas and nephew Max Thomas and her grandnieces Melora Howard, Liddy Bileck, grandnephew Joshua Howard.
Sophie and Harry enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling around the United States in their GMC SUV, pulling their camper – activities they gave up only a few years ago. As an Ohio Bell Telephone retiree, Sophie’s interests also included being a lifelong member of the Akron Chapter of the Telephone Pioneer Volunteers of America, a network of volunteers dedicated to local community service. She even attended a meeting this past November.
Her funeral service will be held at Bacher Funeral Home, 3250 Greenwich Rd. in Norton on Sunday, December 10, at 1 pm. Visitation and gathering will follow directly. There will be a private interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
